Evolven turns to Cloudyn for cloud cost management

I recently had the opportunity to communicate with Sasha Gillenson, CEO of Evolven, about the its use of Cloudyn's cloud cost management service.

Please introduce yourself and your company

I am a CEO and Founder of Evolven Software. Prior to starting Evolven I worked for more than 13 years in Mercury Interactive which allowed me to acquire extensive experience in IT management and automation.

Evolven develops a Change Monitoring solution that was designed from the ground up for today's dynamic, complex modern data center, and takes a new approach to change and configuration management. It monitors, analyzes and delivers actionable information on changes and configurations, and empowers IT operations, change and configuration professionals to reduce risk of change and improve stability.

What were you doing that required this type of technology?

Evolven launched a Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) platform in October 2011. The SaaS facility is operated in Amazon EC2. It quickly grew close to 100 servers which required us to look for a range of management solutions (starting from cost management and optimization) and we needed technology that could help us manage the cost and complexity of this solution.

What products did you consider before making a selection?

In the beginning I used only the AWS Management Console, but it only gave me a basic break-down of my expenses. This information was not actionable enough so I looked to Cloudyn for more depth to the information.

Why did you select this product?

I selected Cloudyn as it actually provided me with actionable information about my cloud environment without any administration or management overhead. Right in the beginning Cloudyn provided us with a recommendation that allowed us to reduce our costs by 30% in a matter of few days.

What tangible benefits have you gotten through the use of this product?

The most important outcome is continuous cost reduction that allowed us to save over 50% of the original cost of non-optimized environment. Also Cloudyn allows us to avoid unnecessary sprawl of the technology.

What advice would you offer others?

As soon as your cloud environment exceeds just several servers and you need to start controlling your spend and growth. There is a lot of data and native cloud providers’ tools do not help you to handle it. A solution like Cloudyn allows you to get grip of your environment with zero overhead (which is particularly important for a small company like ours).

Snapshot analysis

Cloudyn is one of a number of new companies focused on helping organizations make best use of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)  offerings. What differentiates Cloudyn from the others is its ability to monitor what services are being used, analyze the cost of those services and make actionable suggestions to reduce costs while still meeting service objectives.

After a very quick setup and registration, Cloudyn discovers what cloud services are in use and starts tracking. It does this without having to be given more than read-only access.

Cloudyn then seeks the most optimal price plan for the required services and recommends configurations changes.

I expect that we'll see many new suppliers of cloud management services. Cloudyn appears to be one of the few that has tightly focused on cost management.
